Make Solo 2 Happen!

Yesterday was Make Solo 2 Happen Day! And while Stardust is late to the party, I wanted to join in with why I think we should see a sequel.

While the film itself has had mixed reviews, there is a pretty strong rumbling within fandom for a follow-up. With good reason, too! Solo: A Star Wars Story brought many memorable characters and moments into canon. It’s presumably the jumping-off point for the new Lando series which is set to come to Disney+ in the near future. As it turns out, this movie has aged extremely well. Let’s talk about some of the things that make it great and what we’d like to see from a second Solo movie.

Something Old, Something New

Something that I don’t believe to be debatable at all is the performances in Solo. If you’ve ever watched Solo and then one of the original trilogy movies back-to-back, it’s hard not to see the little movements and faces that Alden Ehrenreich took from the original Harrison Ford portrayal. This attention to detail is one of the things that makes Solosuch a joy for fans to watch.

Of course, Joonas Suotamo also had big shoes to fill with this being the second time taking the lead on playing the role of Chewbacca. Again, the detail is in the movements. Suotamo made the transfer of the role of Chewbacca from Peter Mayhew fairly seamless. Not only that, but like Mayhew, Joonas continually proves himself to be a gift to the fandom making him the perfect steward for the wookiee with the heart of gold.

Donald Glover brought incredible energy to the role of young Lando Calrissian. Personally, I hope that the new Disney+ series will give us the Calrissian Chronicles vlog that we’ve all been asking for since Solo was released. Fun to watch, completely believable as a younger version of the Lando we know, and I just hope we see him reprise this role…perhaps in a SOLO 2!

Where Solo truly shined was in the new characters it gave us. Q’ira will go down for me as one of the most interesting and complex characters in the Star Wars universe. As much as she doesn’t want to hurt the boy that came back for her, she has seen too much and has different interests and allegiances now. The strongest allegiance being to herself because she will not allow Han to hold her back from the future she has calculated. I have to stan.

Enfys Nest and the Cloud Riders are the other standout characters for me. A band of young people, fierce in their quest to fight back against an Empire. Enfys, the rebel who roams the galaxy with poetry on her forehead, is such an intriguing character. She reveals quite a bit about her past, but I’m interested in her future and how this group continues to antagonize their opposition. Who does she know and where do their paths cross? It’s just nice to see another leader on the block.

Possible Solo 2 Themes

So where could a second Solo film take us? There is a ton of material to play with in both the way the movie leaves us and the content we know of from before and after its release.

My biggest wish is for more Q’ira. I need more of her story, I need more Crimson Dawn, I need more Darth Maul content. There’s a lot to unpack and I just don’t believe Han could let her go like this. He’s not a scoundrel just yet when the film ends. He’s just right at the beginning of that path and what if part of that is just this one woman who breaks his heart over and over again?

In the rumor mill the churned before the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, many believed that Sana Starros would be making a live-action appearance. It was an exciting prospect, but ultimately that was not the direction for this film. Sana is a wonderful character in the comics and a Solo 2 could bring her to the big screen where more people can fall in love with her. We deserve it.

When Disney says, “I know a place…,” it is almost always Tattooine. The most logical place for this all to head to would be to see how Han formed a working relationship with Jabba. More of Jabba’s Palace would honestly be welcome. It’s one of my favorite things about Return of the Jedi. Who is going to say no to more Max Reebo content? Not I. While not my favorite option for the direction of Solo 2, it’s still a fun one.

I have to be honest. When this movie came out, I wasn’t a fan. However, it has really grown on me for all of the reasons mentioned above and more. I’m with all the other fans banging on Lucasfilm’s door.

Make Solo 2 happen!
