Featuring Anna, Jamie, Jennie, Lauren, Lindsay, Nessa, Patty, Staci, and edited by Liv
The Project Stardust team has decided to come together to have a roundtable after each episode of The Bad Batch! Each week we will be discussing the things we liked and the questions we have about this episode. In preparation for this new series, we watched the Bad Batch Arc of The Clone Wars season 8, and most excitingly, some of us were brand new to The Clone Wars! In the coming weeks, we will be discussing the things we liked and the questions we have about each episode. This week, this group made up of both Clone Wars veterans and more recent fans of Clone Force 99 will be tackling episode 8 of The Bad Batch. As such, there are spoilers—if you haven’t watched the episode yet, come back here once you have!
One Thing We Loved
Anna: OMG IT’S CAD BANE!!!!!! I love the more nefarious characters in the Star Wars universe, so this was a great treat for me.
Jennie: Sure, Cad Bane coming back was cool and all. The best part though, was Todo 360 being back! Love that droid! He has some great lines, and his snark just brings so much joy to my life! I also love how he knocks the bow out of Omega’s hands with his discombobulated booster leg!
Lauren: Who had Cad Bane on their Bad Batch bingo card? So unexpected, but it makes perfect sense that multiple bounty hunters are after CF99, and it makes sense that the Kaminoans are hiring the best of the best. Since we know that multiple bounty hunters are out there, it opens up the possibility that the others will attempt to snatch Omega before Cad Bane can make it back to Kamino with her. I’m sensing a Cad Bane/Fennec Shand showdown.
Lindsay: As someone who has had little exposure to some of the non-movie characters (in part because I also still need to watch Clone Wars and most of Rebels), it was fun to officially meet Cad Bane and Todo 360. I loved the serious Western vibes of the face-off between Cad and Hunter, and part of the reason I love Star Wars generally is the constant introduction of new-to-me characters and what it means for the future of the story.
Nessa: CAD BANE????? Can I just spaz out about CAD BANE? I love a lot of bounty hunters, don’t get me wrong, but Bane is right up there with Embo for me. It was so exciting to see him pop up as another sudden adversary in this episode and make the Bad Batch’s biggest fear into a reality. Omega KIDNAPPED. On top of that, can we talk about that amazing scene that uses the HUD of Hunters helmet? It was so cool to get that inside look with their helmets. Absolutely love it, and the fact that it reflected the Republic Commando game!!
Staci: My favorite part of this episode was the scene where the Batchers were walking through the engine. I was thinking how strange it would be to be inside a mechanical part of one of those huge ships. I had a feeling it would activate, and it did! The whole sequence trying to get out of the engine in time was so fun to watch. I loved that who ultimately got the blast was the traitor, Crosshair!
One Thing We Did Not Love
Anna: REALLY KAMINOANS. That was unfortunately predictable.
Jennie: I thought the return of Crosshair would be different. They didn’t explain if he has the same elite fighters as his backup or if they were replaced, which I think will become an important part eventually.
Lauren: Truthfully, I was pretty happy with this episode. The situation with Crosshair is stressing me out a little bit. I don’t believe his chip will allow him to stop the mission of taking out CF99. It doesn’t matter how much it hurts and what he loses along the way (preparing myself for the hand chop), he has no choice but to keep going. We need to get that thing out of him!
Lindsay: I am on the fence about how similar this story line is to the last season of The Mandalorian: beloved child has a bounty on its head, and protectors try their best, but eventually the child is snatched from right under their noses. Rescue mission ensues (at least I assume that will be the case). I don’t hate it, but the similarities were clear to me. Otherwise, I don’t think there was anything to dislike about the episode.
Nessa: This is gonna be wild, this is gonna be a shift from the usual, this is just—I am worried about Crosshair. The injuries he sustained make me wonder about how the Kaminoans will view him when he returns. He took a lot of damage to the face and the arm… is he going to be able to maintain his sharpshooting skills well enough to be considered “useful” to the Kaminoans and the Empire?
Staci: When Cad Bane appeared on screen I clapped with joy! Then it sunk in. This is not good for our Batchers! He’s come for Omega! I don’t like that! Then he actually shot Hunter and took Omega. I’m worried for her!
We Have Questions
Anna: I am really curious about Crosshair, his injuries and his recovery. Could this be the door that opens to bring him back into the fold?
Jennie: We know the Kaminoans hired bounty hunters, but did that include Cad or was he hired by someone else? And if he was hired by the Kaminoans, what do they plan to do with Omega?
Lauren: This episode didn’t really leave me with a question. It was pretty strong at creating conflict points that weren’t necessarily cliffhangers. We know exactly where everyone is heading and what the next steps will need to be. Now that Omega is separated from the rest of the Bad Batch, I wonder if this is the time we’re going to see some of her less subtle abilities come out.
Lindsay: If the Kaminoans were just going to put a bounty out for Omega, why did they let her leave in the first place? Didn’t it seem like they had encouraged that? Also, I have to wonder how Crosshair’s injury will impact him. Will he still be able to shoot with the same intensity and prowess? Will he eventually lose his inhibitor chip and rejoin the gang?
Nessa: Okay, how are they bringing Omega home??? And what do the Kaminoans want with her???
Staci: I’m sure I have asked this before but what is so important about Omega?
Bad Batcher of the Week
Anna: Tech! I know he is my Bad Batch boyfriend, but I feel like he really got to shine this week.
Jennie: Sticking with Tech. Just try to change my mind!
Lauren: Crazy Uncle Wrecker teaching all the good things like how to dismantle bombs.
Lindsay: Wrecker, particularly because of his bomb disassembly lesson in this episode!
Nessa: It’s gotta be Hunter. He literally went full showdown with Cad Bane and, despite being taken down, he got back up after. Such a Bad Dad, right? I loved it.
Staci: This week I give standout Batcher to Hunter. He tried to protect Omega in a showdown. He just wasn’t quite fast enough to beat Cad Bane!
